The Isolated Karnali Region
Ensuring equal access to education.
The Karnali region of Nepal is home to some of the most isolated and inaccessible communities in the country – all five districts in this region have a Human Development Index below 0.45. This area is extremely vulnerable to natural hazards, and suffers from a lack of food security, malnutrition and undernourishment, which is made worse by the adverse effects of a decade-long armed conflict.
Across this region, the literacy rate is below 40%, compared to the average Nepali average rate of 75.2%. Ensuring children are able to access a high-quality education is crucial to addressing the development needs of the region.

The Isolated Karnali Region
How We Can Help
Street Child aims to tackle the social and cultural barriers relating to the perceptions of education in the Karnali Region; challenge the marginalisation of children of Karnali in school by ensuring an inclusive school environment for them; and address the resource constraints that restrict access to education, particularly the costs of school that prevent them from enrolling.
